How can I find out how strong an earthquake is without watching the news ( I Need to Know)?

-There was an earthquake at 12:30 am in Carson City,California, and i got really startled. But i remember being in a 4.4 earthquake, so it was MUCH stronger. I heard weird noises (like, its hard to explain, from an old door) coming from the earth which scared me even more. I knew something was going to happen by hearing the sounds, but i didn't know it was going to be an earthquake that lasted a couple of seconds long. So is there like maybe a website that i can look for? Thanks, Nat :]The strength (or amplitude, or as measured on the Richter Scale) is based on the ground movement at the point or line of the quake.

Our personal sensing of the earthquake - sight, sound, feel - depend on how far we are from the quake's origin, what type of soil we are on, and the building we are in.

So, we can't gauge an earthquake on our sensation of it, except that if there is major shaking, e.g., objects falling off of shelves, then it's probably on the high side.https://sslearthquake.usgs.gov/ens/

If you dont like this one just google Earthquake Notifications
