-The right wing of the republican party is committed to the wealthy as this is where their power comes from. They argue that the richest create jobs, something known as trickle down. This theory is widely discredited among educated economists and has been demonstrated to not work. The funny part is that the screaming masses who support the Tea Party Activists would not pay more taxes if the Bush cuts were eliminated. But they are to frenzied to understand that the radio talk show hosts who incite them would have to pay their fair share. The right wing of the republican party is committed to the wealthy as this is where their power comes from. Speaking of jobs, they have zero plans to bring jobs back to this country or to create them here. They want to beat down the people so they will be desperate and happy to be wage slaves and give up all the worker protections just so they can get a job.
They fail to realize that by increasing revenue, the government can fix the infrastructure, which has to be done any way. By doing that, they will create jobs and help small businesses, a lot of them, all over the country. Creating jobs means people have taxable income, increasing revenue at all levels of government. If people have jobs, they won't need extended unemployment. That reduces government costs. There will be fewer people getting government assistance and medical care because they will have jobs and insurance. This will also reduce costs. With increased revenue and reduced costs and with some legislation that brings jobs back to this country, the economy will stabilize, even improve. And then we can talk about tax cuts.
If not raising taxes, they should at least close loopholes for the rich so they pay their fair share. If a loophole doesn't directly create jobs, it should be closed.
I'm not American, so I'm not into the entire politics of the US. But I do have a theory.
Raising taxes is never a popular thing to do, everybody hates paying them. The President being a democrat needs to pull the country out of it's misery so the Republicans currently aren't responsible for that.
Next year there are presidential elections, so saying no to rasing taxes now will most likely win them votes, increasing their chances of taking over the White House next year.
All comes down to elecational benefits I think and apparently they're willing to take the risk of another economic crack down, they sure have thought about that risk when saying 'no'.
@Fishr68: You pay so little taxes in US, compared to European countries. But still everybody hates paying more taxes.
Raising taxes is not the answer. If anything, a tax holiday, for say, an entire year would rejuvenate the economy more then tax hikes. It would allow people to pay for different things, thus putting more money into the economy. Also, the government has to stop spending money we don't have! They have to cut spending, not raise taxes!
Taxed Enough Already.
Americans have had it up to here.
